nēhinawēwin - Swampy Cree App Now Available
Cameron Adams is an inspiration for many reasons. Most recently among his long list of accomplishments of helping others is the development and launch of the nēhinawēwin app on the apple store! Many have watched as Cameron diligently worked for a number of years to bring language speakers, knowledge keepers and institutional supports together to make this app possible. As someone who is very interested in learning my language, this app, which is the exact dialect from Northern Manitoba my community of Shamattawa speaks, I am hoping that this can help develop my abilities to speak and understand my original language.
Yesterday, Cameron was featured in this CBC article - please have a read:
“Swampy Cree app aims to help people reconnect with Indigenous language (CBC)”
You can now download the app for free on any Apple device from the app store!
Here is the description:
“A language resource based on the N dialect of Swampy Cree, better known as nēhinawēwin or ininīmowin in Treaty 5 Territory in Northern Manitoba.
nēhinawēwin is a Swampy Cree language app, which has been created to document and share the language for anyone wanting to learn it. Words and phrases can be searched by category, or within the app. The app utilizes Standardized Roman Orthography, the recognized writing system for the Cree language in Canada. It also has a syllabic character option to convert all material into syllabics.”
Cameron is amazing and is putting together an event in the middle of January to teach folks about the different ways they can use this app. Here is the description: “This event will be to launch the nēhinawēwin (Swampy Cree) app that is now available. We will be using the app and sharing it’s features and how someone can use it and learn.” I am excited to attend it, you can RSVP to the event on Facebook or click the button below:
